This book builds on the what of STEM, to show you how you can make this interdisciplinary approach happen in your classroom, school, or district. We will help you answer questions like these: How can we create our own STEM units? How do we address the standards we need to cover? How can we create experiences that will engage all students? What does rigor look like in a lesson? And, most importantly, how do we begin? Understanding what STEM education is was only the first step. Knowing how is next.

In this book, we introduce to you a model and a template for planning STEM units. The W.H.E.R.E. Model includes five key components, or as we call them, guideposts:

• W—What and why: What needs to be learned and why?
• H—How: How do I plan to get there? What experiences do students need to have?
• E—Evidence and evaluation: What evidence of learning will be used and how will I evaluate the final product or project?
• R—Rigor and relevance: How will I provide opportunities to increase the rigor of students’ thinking and the relevance to students’ experiences in the real world?
• E—Excite, engage, and explore: How do I excite the learners, cognitively engage them, and allow for them to explore for deeper understanding of the content and skills?
