Because Heinemann sells eBooks directly from our website, how our eBooks are downloaded and accessed is different from that of other popular eBook retailers. We've taken your questions and created this step-by-step guide to purchasing, downloading, and reading our eBooks. The steps necessary are slightly different depending on what kind of device you are using, so please take a moment to watch the step-by-step video for your kind of device or computer and follow the written instructions below the video. For Any Computer or Device, before you purchase an eBook from our website, you'll need:
- A Heinemann.com account
- An Adobe ID
- The Adobe Digital Edition App (for a tablet) or program (on a computer). Please see instructions for downloading this App in the section for the specific sort of device or computer you'll be using.
Create your Heinemann.com Account
If you don't already have one, we highly recommend you create a Heinemann.com account before purchasing an eBook from Heinemann. To do this, go to Heinemann.com and look for the "create account" button at the top right of the homepage. At that point you'll just need to enter your name, email address, and create a password and you're all set up.
If you already have a Heinemann.com account, we suggest you log into it before making your eBook purchase.
Create an Adobe ID
Before purchasing your eBook from Heinemann.com, you will also need to create a free Adobe ID account in order to access your eBook file. To do so, visit Accounts.adobe.com to create your Adobe ID.
For iPad or Tablet
Note: If you plan to read our eBook on a PC, please note you cannot use a Chromebook at this time or Adobe Acrobat. We recommend using the Adobe Digital Editions app, which can be downloaded from the Adobe website for free. Heinemann eBooks have DRM protection, so the look and feel of how you access our materials might be different from other eBooks you've used from other vendors. If using a school device, make sure you have the required permissions from your IT group that are required to download new software before downloading Adobe Digital Editions.

- Navigate to the Adobe Digital Editions app in the App store, or via the Adobe Digital Edition website.
- Complete installation of the Adobe Digital App as you would any other app on your device
- Once you've downloaded the Adobe Digital Edition app onto your device, log in with your Adobe ID. To do so, open the app on your device, tap on the upper left three lines, navigate to settings, then enter your Adobe ID email and password and tap authorize.
Purchase An eBook
With the Adobe Digital Edition now installed, return to Heinemann.com to make your eBook purchase.
- Log in to Heinemann.com.
- Find the eBook you wish to purchase by navigating to the product page and choosing the eBook purchasing option.
- Complete the purchase via Heinemann.com.
- Once your purchase is processed, you will receive an email from us with the links to download your eBook. We suggest opening this email or the link within, on the device you plan on reading the eBook on. You can select either ePub or PDF. ePub is more ideal for tablets or e-readers.
- On the device with your Adobe Digital Editions app installed, log in with your Adobe ID, then once you tap or click on the link from the email, the Adobe Digital Editions app or program should instantly launch and open your eBook.
- If you're only purchasing one ebook at a time, you can simply access it from the email confirming your purchase or by logging into your online resources from Heinemann.com where you can select either ePub or PDF. For bulk purchases, please refer to the FAQ section at the bottom.

- Click on "Download Digital Edition 4.5.11 Macintosh (22MB)"
- Find the file in your downloads folder (file name "ADE_4.5_Installer.dmg") and double click to view the installer package.
- Click on the installer package
- The installation window will open. Follow all steps, clicking "Continue" and "Install" when prompted.
- Once the installation is complete, open the Adobe Digital Editions program on your computer and enter your Adobe ID.
Purchase An eBook
With the Adobe Digital Edition now installed, return to Heinemann.com to make your eBook purchase.
- Log in to Heinemann.com.
- Find the eBook you wish to purchase by navigating to the product page and choosing the eBook purchasing option.
- Complete the purchase via Heinemann.com.
- Once your purchase is processed, you will receive an email from us with the links to download your eBook. We suggest opening this email or the link within, on the device you plan on reading the eBook on. You can select either ePub or PDF. ePub is more ideal for tablets or e-readers.
- From either the email confirming your purchase or from within your Heinemann.com online resources, select the file you would like to download (either ePUB or uPDF) and click on it to download it.
- Once the file downloads, click on the file (the name of the file will be URLLink.acsm)
- The Adobe Digital Editions program will open and, if you're already logged in with your Adobe ID, the download will begin.
- If you've not been logged in with your Adobe ID, a window titled "Computer Authorization" will pop up.
Note: If clicking on the URLLink.acsm file did not result in it being opened in Digital Editions, follow these steps:
1. Click on File > Add to Library.
2. Then click on the PDF/EPUB files drop down on the bottom and then select ACSM files.
3. Locate the eBook file named URLLink.acsm (typically in your Downloads folder).
4. Click Open.
- You will then be asked to set up an Adobe ID, if you have not already added or set one up. You'll need and Adobe ID if you would like to be able to view the eBook on multiple devices. DO NOT authorize your computer without an Adobe ID as it will limit your options for how you read the eBook. (If you choose to authorize without an Adobe ID before you download the eBook the very first time, you will only be able to read the book on that device.)
- Click "Create an Adobe ID" if you do not already have one
- Clicking "Create Adobe ID" will open up the Adobe account creation webpage in a web browser. The, enter your information and click "create account."
- Enjoy your Heinemann eBook!

- Once the installation of the app is complete, click "Close."

Accessing your purchased eBook:
- Select the file you would like to download (either ePUB or uPDF) and click on it to download it
- Locate the file in your downloads folder (file name will be URLLink.acsm) and double click it to open it.
- It will open in the Adobe Digital Editions app
- You will have the option to set up an Adobe ID if you would like to be able to view the eBook on multiple devices if you have not already done this as suggested at the top of this blog. DO NOT authorize your computer without an Adobe ID, as it will limit your options for how you read the eBook.(If you choose to authorize without an Adobe ID before you download the eBook the very first time, you will only be able to read the book on that device.)
- To set up an Adobe ID if you do not already have one, click "Create an Adobe ID".
- Once the Adobe ID is created, go back to the Adobe Digital Editions app and enter the email address and password for the Adobe ID you just set up.
- After you've authorized your computer, the eBook file will automatically start downloading in the Adobe Digital Editions app. You will see a screen like the one below as the download progresses.
- Once the download completes, the eBook will open. Enjoy!

FAQs
Which eBook format should I choose?
The eBook format you choose will depend on your operating system and if you would like to read your eBook on your computer or a hand held device. Heinemann supplies most titles as both uPDFs and ePUBs. ePUB files are reflowable depending on your reader and uPDFs are fixed page (more closely mimicking a print page).
Can I download my eBook multiple times?
Heinemann eBooks can be downloaded on up to six different devices.
What devices can I read my eBook on?
Heinemann eBooks can be read on PCs, MACs, Kindle Fires, and all Android and iOS devices.
Do I need special software to read my Heinemann eBook?
Yes, special software is necessary before downloading and reading your Heinemann eBook. For more information on device software see the instructions above.
Why does a Heinemann eBook cost less than a print book?
Heinemann is able to reduce manufacturing costs with its eBooks and attempts to pass those savings along to you wherever possible.
Can I print my eBook?
No, you cannot print Heinemann eBooks due to the eBooks' security settings.
What is the refund/return policy for eBooks?
Heinemann eBooks cannot physically be returned, so we do not refund for eBooks that have been successfully transmitted and downloaded. If you have ordered in error please contact the Heinemann Customer Service team at 800.225.5800 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (EST), Monday through Friday.
How do I get help if I have a problem ordering an eBook?

How do I request help with technical or download issues?

Once I have purchased and downloaded my eBook, will it always be available?
Yes, once you have purchased and downloaded a Heinemann eBook it is yours. It will reside in your library on the device you downloaded it to and a link to the eBook will always be available on your "My Online Resources" page in your Heinemann.com account.
What does DRM protected mean?
DRM stands for digital rights management. DRM specifications for each eBook are set by the publisher to protect author's rights. All Heinemann eBooks are protected by DRM, which prohibits copying or printing copies of eBooks. DRM ensures that the person who buys a file is its sole owner and is unable to create illegal copies to distribute on their own. You may use your account to download the eBook to six different devices including readers, laptops, and desktops.
Can I order eBooks by phone?
Yes; all regular methods of ordering are available for eBooks. Online ordering provides the fastest delivery; access for orders placed via other methods may take 24-48 hours. To order a Heinemann eBook by phone you may call the Heinemann Customer Service team at 877.231.6980 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (EST), Monday through Friday.
Can I order multiple copies of an eBook at once?
Yes, you can purchase multiple copies of an eBook at once. Within your confirmation email you will receive keycodes for each eBook which you may distribute.
Do I need a code?
No, for individual purchases of an eBook, you will not need a code. However, if you purchase an eBook in bulk (meaning many copies of one eBook) from Heinemann.com, you will need a registration code for access. Otherwise, single purchases can be accessed immediately from the email, if you have both the Adobe Digital Reader app installed and the Adobe ID entered into the Adobe Digital Reader App.
Can I purchase a Heinemann eBook as a gift?
Yes, you can purchase a Heinemann eBook as a gift. You will need to provide the recipient's complete address details and email address for accurate "delivery."
Can I read Heinemann eBooks on a Kindle?
Heinemann eBooks can be read on the Kindle Fire but not on previous generations of Kindles. However, you will need to have the Overdrive app downloaded to your Kindle Fire before downloading your eBook.
