Developed by Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell In an alphabetic language such as English, phonics describes the relationships between the sounds of language and its graphic symbols, i.e., the letters. With knowledge of letter-sound relationships, children add to their ability to derive meaning from print, to accurately turn sounds into their own print (i.e., spelling), and to solve increasingly longer words. Participants in this session will use the lessons to explore the teaching of phonics through both explicit and implicit instruction. Learning Goals Participants will: Expand their knowledge of the nine areas of learning for phonics, spelling, and word study.
