During interactive writing, the teacher cocreates a text with the students. The teacher shares the pen with the students as students contribute to the text. Interactive writing is a highly engaging activity for students and gives them ownership of the text they are writing. Interactive writing is a powerful activity that can be used across all curriculum contexts throughout the school day. Learning Goals Participants will: Explore the key features of an interactive writing lesson. Explore how to engage students in interactive writing lessons. Explore how the reading and writing process is strengthened through interactive writing. Explore how to collect student data to inform instruction and teacher decision making. Explore how to use The Literacy Continuum to select goals for teaching. Observe video lessons and try some interactive lessons with students. Resources Needed The Fountas & Pinnell Literacy Continuum, Expanded Edition: A Tool for Assessment, Planning, and Teaching, PreK-8 Interactive Writing: How Language and Literacy Come Together, K-2 Time Requirement Three sessions: each session two hours, for a total of six hours.
