Write Beside Them: Risk, Voice, and Clarity in High School Writing

Developed by Penny Kittle
Based on the PD resource, Write Beside Them: Risk, Voice, and Clarity in High School Writing
Recommended Grade Level: Grades 6 - 12

In this new seminar, teachers will learn how to establish a writing workshop for adolescents where students develop voice and craft in all genres. Writing with a purpose, understanding the elements of craft, and carefully analyzing the intentions of a text leads students to a deep understanding of writing for a variety of audiences and needs. Learn how to engage adolescents in an authentic writing workshop where the teacher models the craft in front of students, making explicit the kinds of decisions made by proficient writers. Penny Kittle's seminar helps teachers discover new insights about high-quality writing instruction and explores how to model the central elements of the craft: topic choice, rereading and revision, response, grammar, and most of all, the writing life.

Teachers will gain a deeper understanding of the link between instructional theory and their own day-to-day classroom teaching practices. Throughout the day, they will also use their own writing notebooks to practice and reflect on their writing, find prompts for in-class quick writes, and make connections between their writing process and that of their students. Participants will receive Kittle's Write Beside Them professional book and accompanying DVD—a resource filled with in-the-classroom video clips that explicitly model how to make the process of writing accessible to all kids.

Course goals:

  • Discover the power of a middle or high school writing workshop, where an emphasis on process, not product, fuels remarkable growth in students' writing
  • Learn to develop minilessons that respond to students' needs
  • Understand the importance of daily writing practice through writer's notebooks and quick writes.
