The Comprehension Toolkit: Developing Language and Lessons for Active Literacy

Recommended Grade Level: Grades 3–6
The Comprehension Toolkit emphasizes active literacy—reading, writing, talking, listening and investigating—and in this firsthand course, your teachers will discover how to use the Toolkit to develop these crucial comprehension skills.
Exploring the resources provided in The Comprehension Toolkit, teachers will learn how Stephanie Harvey and Anne Gouvis' model of instruction moves students toward strategic reading and deeper comprehension. The Toolkit course offers ways to make comprehension lessons explicit by using instructional strategies such as modeling, guided practice, collaborative practice, and independent practice.
Help students develop the inner conversations with texts that lead to real understanding.

Course Goals:
- Increase teacher's understanding of how they can help their students get more from their reading
- Explore ways in which the ideas and models in the Comprehension Toolkit can be used as a resource in a classroom.
