He knows his name starts with a "C" but he doesn't know the sound it makes. We don't have a RR program in place. I too think that 1 on 1 tutoring is going to be the best thing for him. I have talked to the classroom teacher and our principal will return on Monday and can make a final decision.

He would benefit from Reading Recovery. Do you have RR in your school? It sounds like he needs a 1-1 intervention, but it's difficult to say for sure without observation.

Does he know and recognize his name? Names are a good starting point.

It would be helpful to have a colleague/reading specialist/special education observe him in a lesson and brainstorm ways to help him.

I have a student who isn't making any progress at all. He doesn't know his letters/sounds or any HFW. When he gets to an 'a' he says 'b' and is so sure of it. When it is "I" it is 'r'. Yesterday our book was "At the Zoo". I asked what kind of animals would be at the zoo. The other child in the group named things like a hippo, monkey, snake, octopus, etc. I continually tried to prompt him and he finally said "shark" when the other student said octopus. We reread the book (for the 3rd time) alone after the other student went to class and for the words "We can see a monkey" he said "B R M B monkey!" I would reread it with him and he would still say his own words. We did flash card letters and he was able to tell me the name of X, W, Y but he had no idea what the sounds were. The majority of the kids are making some progress but I feel like he isn't getting anything out of the LLI program. If they read in unison he tries to copy what the other kids are saying but will be in the wrong spot or still skipping a word. He went to pre-k and his TPRI scores haven't improved from BOY. I'm really not sure what to do to help him without it messing up the entire group.
