In the LLI Program Guide, among the "Frequently Asked Questions" (find them in the Orange version, page 96; Blue, p. 92; Green, p. 98), Fountas & Pinnell state, "Yes. If needed, a child could be regrouped with others and stay in LLI all year. Of course, you would want to do careful progress monitoring to be sure that the intervention is working. In some cases, you may want a thorough assessment of the child's learning needs by a psychologist."

Also, you may want to use the "Leveled Literacy Intervention Reflection Guide" (LLI Program Guides: Orange, p. 92; Blue, p. 88; Green, p. 94) to reflect on your teaching decisions.

What is your opinion about keeping students in an LLI group all year long? We are concerned about keeping some students in an LLI group all year who are making progress but have not reached the grade level in reading. We realize that the program is designed to move groups toward their reading level in 14-18 weeks and then start a new group of students. We have students that are making progress but have not reached their reading level yet. Do we keep them for another 14-18 weeks of instruction or return them to the classroom?
